Walk-In Notary in Magnolia: What to Bring and What We Can't Notarize
Texas notary basics for Magnolia, Tomball, Spring, and The Woodlands — what to bring to your appointment, what photo ID we accept, and the documents Texas notaries are not allowed to certify.
We notarize documents almost every day at the Magnolia counter — power of attorney forms, real estate paperwork, vehicle title transfers, sworn statements, parental consent forms, and the long list of “my [insert state] employer needs this signed in front of someone.” Most of these take five minutes if you walk in prepared.
Here’s the short version of how to come in ready, and the small list of documents Texas notaries are not legally allowed to handle.
What to bring
1. The unsigned document. Don’t sign it at home. Texas law requires the notary to watch you sign — that’s the whole point of the acknowledgment. If the document is already signed, in most cases we can’t notarize it. Bring it blank and we’ll watch you sign at the counter.
2. A current government-issued photo ID. Acceptable IDs in Texas: a Texas driver’s license, a Texas DPS ID card, a U.S. passport or passport card, a U.S. military ID, a permanent resident card, or another state’s driver’s license. The ID has to be current — an expired ID, even by one day, is not acceptable for notarization in Texas. Plan ahead if your ID is close to expiring.
3. Anyone else who needs to sign. If the document needs two signatures (a deed of trust, a divorce decree, a parental consent form with both parents), every signer needs to be physically present at the counter, with their own current photo ID, at the same time.
4. Your witnesses, if the document calls for them. Some Texas documents — particularly self-proving wills — require witnesses in addition to a notary. Texas notaries are not allowed to act as a witness on the same document they are notarizing, and we can’t supply witnesses from our staff. Bring two adults who are not party to the document and not related to anyone signing.
Walk in or call first?
Walk-ins are welcome during open hours. We’re staffed Monday through Friday 9 to 6 and Saturday 10 to 4. If you have a complex multi-page document or a long list of signers, calling 936-444-9711 ahead lets us pull the right journal entries and get you in and out faster.
What Texas notaries are not allowed to do
These come up more often than you’d think:
- We can’t certify a copy of a vital record. Birth certificates, marriage licenses, death certificates, and divorce decrees can only be certified by the office that issued them. The Texas Secretary of State or the county clerk that issued the document is the only correct path. We can notarize an affidavit attesting to a copy in some cases, but that’s a different thing — and you should ask the agency receiving the document whether that satisfies them.
- We can’t notarize a document we have a personal interest in. A notary cannot notarize their own signature, a spouse’s, or any document where the notary is a party.
- We can’t give legal advice. We can tell you whether a document is properly executed for notarization. We can’t tell you whether the document does what it says it does, whether you should sign it, or whether it’s the right form for your situation. Those are questions for an attorney.
- We can’t translate. If the document is in a language the signer doesn’t read, the signer needs a translator they trust before we can notarize. The notarial certificate itself, however, will be in English — that’s a Texas requirement.
- We can’t notarize an “I-9” employment verification. I-9 forms are completed by an authorized representative of the employer, not a notary. Notaries can act as an authorized representative if the employer designates them, but that’s the employer’s decision, not the notary’s.
Fees
Texas caps notary fees by statute. Our walk-in pricing matches Texas law — there are no surprise fees and no charge for a notarization that turns out to be one we can’t perform.
